Fix Battery Drain Issue After Unlocking iPhone 3GS / 3G With Ultrasn0w 1.2 on Baseband 06.15.00
Dec 1st
The recently released PwnageTool / Redsn0w jailbreak tools for iOS 4.2.1 requires you to transfer iPad’s 3.2.2 baseband to your iPhone 3GS & 3G in order to unlock it using Ultrasn0w 1.2. This has resulted in poor battery performance as has been experienced by many users. Some users have also complained about their device becoming very hot when in use.
An official fix for this problem is currently being worked on, and it will be released on Cydia when ready. But in the meantime, you can try one of the following methods to temporary fix the issue:
Method 1: The first method requires you or a friend to have the official iPhone SIM card. What you need to do is put that SIM in the iPhone and let it activate officially. It will even work if the SIM card is not active in that country or is dead. Once your iPhone is activated with this SIM card, you can then take it out and switch back to whichever one you like.
Method 2: If you cannot get hold of an official SIM card, a temporary fix is to install SBSettings and turn your 3G off every time you are done using it. This will prevent the battery drain issue but is slightly tedious and annoying.
Method 3: This method is not available yet but a Dev-Team member is said to be working on an official fix for this issue. Once released on Cydia, all you will need to do is install it to your iPhone.
Here is the statement from Sherif Hashim:
On a very important side note, before anyone starts to complain about battery drainage issues after installing the new ultrasn0w on the 6.15.00 updated BB, the culprit here is not ultrasn0w, it’s the hacktivation process (activating the phone by pwnage tool or redsn0w rather than using an official carrier sim to do so) that u mostly did while jailbreaking.
The 4.1 and 4.2.1 ipsws unlike their old ancestors, seem to keep looking for valid push certificates all the time, either thru your wifi, or thru your cellular data network (which u only have after installing ultrasn0w and hence u accuse it) , this can be seen clearly if u have a cellular working data plan for 3g or edge and u watched the settings > general > usage > cellular network data (sent & received are continuously increasing even without using any internet traffics on the phone) , this will also render the phone going hot even in stand by mode and also very rapid battery drainage occurs plus consuming ur data if you were not on an unlimited plan.
Hold tight for the fix and check back for updates when the fix is in!
How to Unlock iOS 4.2.1 with Ultrasn0w 1.2 for 3G 3GS NOT iPhone 4
Nov 30th
The iPhone Dev-Team has released the updated version of carrier unlocking tool called Ultrasn0w which can unlock the latest iOS 4.2.1 and 4.1 firmware on iPhone 3GS and 3G on basebands later than 05.13.04, more specifically a custom inserted iPad baseband 06.15.00. Since iPhone 4 has different baseband (modem) chip, It’ll take a little while longer for the Dev Team to unlock it on the latest firmware. There is currently no ETA for the i4 unlock.
Follow the instructions posted below to unlock your iPhone 3GS or 3G on iOS 4.2.1.
WARNING: This mod is most likely irreversable. It will update your modem baseband version to an iPad baseband that will allow Apple to deny your warranty AND make it impossible to apply further baseband updates in the future (unless Apple makes basebands with a greater number than 06.15.00)
How to: Update iPhone 3GS & 3G to 06.15.00 Baseband for Unlock:
Step 1: Ultrasn0w 1.2 unlocking requires that your phone is jailbroken on 4.1 or 4.2.1 firmware with 06.15.00 baseband. Follow the complete guide posted here (with PwnageTool) or here (for Redsn0w) to update your iPhone 3GS or 3G baseband to 06.15.00 and jailbreak it on iOS 4.1 / 4.2.1.
How to: Unlock iPhone 3GS & 3G on iOS 4.2.1 / 4.1:
Step 2: Once you are done with the jailbreak, you can now unlock your iPhone on any baseband using Ultrasn0w 1.2 from Cydia. To do this:
Start “Cydia” on your iPhone.
Touch on “Manage” tab on the bottom.
Now touch on “Sources” as seen in the screenshot below:
Touch on “Edit” and then on “Add”. You will be prompted to enter a url source as seen in the screenshot below. Type “http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com” and touch on “Add Source” to add this repo if you haven’t already.
Cydia will now automatically update your sources by following a series of automated steps.
After installation is completed click “done”. Click the new source you just added then choose “ultrasn0w 1.2” in Cydia and install this application. This app will automatically unlock your iPhone so that you can use it with any carrier.
Step 3: Now simply restart your iPhone and voila! you should now have a fully unlocked iPhone 3GS or 3G, running iOS 4.2.1 !
How to Update iPhone 3GS / 3G Baseband to 06.15.00 with Redsn0w 0.9.6b5 for iOS 4.2.1 Unlock & Jailbreak
Nov 30th
Redsn0w 0.9.6b5 has just been released which can jailbreak and update iPhone 3GS & 3G baseband to 06.15.00 so that it can be unlocked using the newly released Ultrasn0w 1.2. This is not QUITE as simple as previous jailbreak apps, but works quite well. Our iPhone Dev Team friends have also added some additional tools for the iPhone jailbreaking geeks out there.
The new redsn0w 0.9.6beta5 is out. It gives both Windows and OSX users the ability to flash the iPad 06.15 baseband on iPhone3G or iPhone3GS. It fetches the baseband files directly from Apple for now (the only IPSW you ever point it at is the stock IPSW for the FW on your iPhone right now). There may be a long delay while it’s doing this (their servers are getting pounded right now)
If you do flash your baseband via redsn0w, please keep it plugged into USB the whole time. You don’t want your battery to die during the flash process!
WARNING:
YOU DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK! PLEASE UNDERSTAND THE CONSEQUENCES OF UPDATING TO 06.15.
There is no way to come back down from 06.15, and there’s no hiding the baseband version from Apple. You’ll be voiding your warranty in a very obvious way.
If some future baseband comes out with a critical fix, you won’t be able to update to it if it remains down in the 05.xx sequence (then again, you wouldn’t update to it if you wanted to keep your unlock anyway).
Starting with FW 4.2.1 if you have 06.15 on your iPhone you won’t ever be able to restore to stock firmware (it will fail). You’ll need to only restore to custom IPSWs (then again, if you’re unlocker you should already be doing that).
Also, like the previous Redsn0w:
This version of Redsn0w is based on Geohot’s Limera1n bootrom exploit which has already pwned all current iOS devices for life. The only problem is that it is a tethered jailbreak, which means you will have to boot it into a “jailbroken state” on every reboot. This so called tethered or semi-tethered jailbreak condition in Redsn0w 0.9.6b4 & b5 however only applies to the new devices like: iPhone 3GS (new bootrom), iPhone 4, iPad, iPod touch 2G (MC Model), iPod touch 3G and the iPod touch 4G. Old devices like iPhone 3GS (old bootrom), iPhone 3G and iPod touch 2G (Non-MC Model) can be jailbroken-untethered right now using this latest version of Redsn0w. So until and unless Comex of Spirit and JailbreakMe fame comes up with another untethered hack for iOS 4.2.1, the jailbreak we get for the newer devices will be tethered (or semi-tethered).
Note: This release of Redsn0w is mainly targeted for iPhone 3GS & 3G users on iOS 4.1 / 4.2.1 who rely on a carrier unlock. All iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad and iPod touch users who don’t rely on a carrier unlock should follow the instructions posted here to jailbreak their iOS device on iOS 4.2.1 using Redsn0w 0.9.6b4.
Follow the instructions posted below to update your iPhone 3GS or 3G to 06.15.00 baseband and jailbreak it on iOS 4.1 /4.2.1.
Step 1: Download iOS 4.2.1 for iPhone 3GS or 3G.
Step 2: Update/Restore to iOS 4.2.1 firmware using the IPSW file you just downloaded via iTunes 10.1.
Step 3: Start Redsn0w 0.9.6b5 and point it to iOS 4.2.1 firmware to proceed with the jailbreak.
Step 4: Now select “Install Cydia” & “Install iPad baseband” options and then click “Next” to continue. Redsn0w will now fetch the exploitable 06.15.00 baseband from 3.2.2 firmware and will replace it the baseband in iOS 4.2.1 / 4.1.
Note: Install iPad baseband option is applicable to iPhone 3GS & 3G users only who rely on a carrier unlock.
Step 5: Now make sure your device is both OFF and PLUGGED IN to the computer before you click “Next”.
At this stage you will be presented with a screen where you will have to quickly hold “Power” button and then while holding the “Power” button, you will now have to hold “Home” button too. Now after few seconds release “Power” button but keep holding “Home” button until installation begins.
Step 6: Sit back and enjoy while Redsn0w will do all the rest for you. Once done, your iPhone or iPod touch will restart automatically and you will find it jailbroken on the latest iOS 4.2.1 firmware, with the unlockable 06.15.00 baseband.
Your done! Unless….
Did your phone restart with a “plug into iTunes” logo?
For iPhone 4, 3GS (New Bootrom), iPod touch 4G / 3G / 2G, iPad ONLY:
Step 7: Now from here onwards, whenever you want to do anything related to jailbreak like SSHing into your device, or running Cydia, you must first run your device in the so called “jailbroken state” on every reboot by using “Just boot tethered right now” option in Redsn0w.

Pwnage Tool 4.1 Jailbreak Guide Iphone iPod iPad Apple TV
Oct 21st
PwnageTool 4.1 has been released. It is only Mac OS X compatible at this time. Download from one of the links below:
What it WILL DO:
- Create custom jailbroken firmware for iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, or Apple TV
- Supports Hacktivation for use without locked carriers on iPhone
- Preserve your old modem/baseband while upgrading firmware to allow Ultrasn0w unlock with your 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01 or 5.13.04 baseband
What it WILL NOT DO:
- Pwnage tool WILL NOT unlock a modem/baseband that was updated by an official 4.1 firmware
This is especially useful for those that have a frozen iPhone 3GS or 4 without Cydia signature blobs on file. You now have a small window of time to restore your device to a jailbroken custom firmware and get your SHSH blob on file with Cydia before Apple goes to 4.2.
PwnageTool 4.1 supports: iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS (new bootrom), iPhone 3G, Apple TV, iPad and iPod Touch 3G/4G.
Follow the instructions below to create and install a custom 4.1 firmware on your iOS device.
Prerequisites: latest version of iTunes and Pwnage tool 4.1
Backup: Run a sync in iTunes to back up all your important data including settings, apps, music, contacts and photos. i4′s should not restore from back-up’s that might have bad settings. Rather, dump your photos, follow-up on all your SMS messages and sync your contacts for later re-sync.
Download: Download PwnageTool 4.1 and the original iOS 4.1 for your version of iOS device.
Pwnage Tool: Megaupload, Rapidshare
iOS 4.1 Links for iOS 4.1 (Official from Apple) iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, iPod touch 2G, iPod touch 3G, iPod touch 4G
Step 1: Start PwnageTool and select your device:
Step 2: PwnageTool will automatically detect the correct firmware for your device
Step 3: Click on “No” when PwnageTool asks you “Do you have an iPhone 3G, 3GS, 4 contract that would activate normally through iTunes?”. If you are an AT&T or other official carrier user, click “Yes”:
Step 4: PwnageTool will now create the custom .ipsw firmware file for your iPhone, which will be pre-jailbroken.
Step 5: Now follow the follow the steps to enter DFU mode:
- Hold the Power and Home buttons for 10 seconds
- Now release the Power button but continue holding the Home button for 10 more seconds
- You device should now be in DFU mode
Step 6: You will now have to restore your iPhone, iPad (on 3.2.2) or iPod touch to this custom firmware 4.1 file. Start iTunes, click on your device icon from the sidebar in iTunes. Now press and hold left “option/alt” button (“Shift” button on Windows) on the keyboard and then click on “Restore” (Not “Update” or “Check for Update”) button in the iTunes and then release the “option/alt” button. iTunes prompt you to select the location for your custom firmware 4.1 file. Select the required custom .ipsw file you just made and click on “Open”.
Step 7: Be Patient. iTunes will install the firmware on your device automatically. You will see a progress bar on your phone while installing. Your phone will restart when done.
Restore from Backup:
We do not recommend restoring from backup on iPhone 4′s, although all will go well on a 3G, 3GS, or iPad. i4′s suffer from some jailbreak/unlock issues to do with restoring from a previous iOS backup. You can still sync contacts etc.
Greenpois0n is released – Jailbreak guide for iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, Apple TV
Oct 12th
Greenpois0n has been released with Geohot’s Limra1n exploit. It works in the same ways as Limera1n. It can be downloaded from Greenpois0n.com.
It works on iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 3G, iPad, iPhone 4, iPod Touch 4G 4.0-4.1 and beyond. It only works in Windows at the moment, although a Mac version of the software should be out soon.
THIS IS NOT A 4.1 UNLOCK. Do not upgrade to 4.1 if you want to retain your unlock.
The 4.1 unlock is on the horizon. We should see its release soon after Apple releases 4.2 to the public.
Download the greenpois0n software from here. It is Windows only at the moment. Make sure your device is plugged in to the computer and powered OFF. Double click the greenpois0n icon to run it, press “Prepare to Jailbreak (DFU),” and follow the instructions to put your device in DFU mode. NOTE: The “sleep” button is the top power button, the home button is the button on the face of the device.

When it’s finished putting you in DFU mode, you can let go of the home button, and press “Jailbreak!” in the bottom left of the greenpois0n program.

The iDevice will flash a white screen a couple times, and evenautally also start up in recovery mode – just let it sit. The entire process takes a couple minutes, during which greenpois0n will simply say “Jailbreaking…”

When it’ finished, it will tell you “Jailbreak Complete!” in the bottom left of the window, and you can press quit. That’s it! You’re jailbroken! Wait for the device to power on, and enjoy your newly jailbroken device.

NOTE: At the moment there seems to be a bug where greenpois0n is not actually running the ramdisk on some systems, this should be worked out soon. That’s not a harmful bug – it just means while the program will think you’re jailbroken, you won’t be.
Contact Joe or Kayla for an appointment if you need help applying the new jailbreak, T-Mobile settings, MMS Settings, Installous, or a YouTube Fix

Geohot Releases New Jailbreak Limra1n!
Oct 10th
THIS IS NOT A NEW UNLOCK. This will not unlock 4.1
iPhones on 4.0.2 or lower CAN BE jailbroken and unlocked
You CANNOT downgrade your modem after installing 4.1
Frozen iphones without a Cydia SHSH signature will still need a custom 4.1 file for the software fix. Hopefully our Greenpois0n guys will help us with that.
This IS a new jailbreak that will allow for Cydia installation then Unltrasn0w unlock application. All of those with iPhone 4′s on 4.0.2 are in luck!
In huge surprise, Geohot released his new jailbreak for all A4 devices earlier today. Visit Limera1n.com for the quick instructions and download link. This is a buggy release. We have tested it on 10 iPhone 4′s with total success and one 3GS with success. This is basically a quick re-package of the Blackra1n jailbreak.
- Download and run Limera1n on a windows PC
- Click “make it rain”
- Follow the instructions to hold your power and home buttons to allow DFU mode
- Turn on your Wifi and run Limera1n
- Install Cydia
- You may need to restart to see Cydia
- Run Cydia and allow all updates to install
- Tap Manage
- Tap Sources
- Tap the repo666.ultrasn0w.com source
- Tap and install Ultrasn0w
That is the quick and dirty!
Contact Joe or Kayla for an appointment if you would rather not try it yourself.

4.1 Jailbreak Greenpois0n Release Takeback
Oct 10th
Drama among the jailbreak geniuses have resulted in chronicdev recinding their 10/10/10 release date of Greenpois0n, the new and long promised jailbreak tool. Geohot releasing his new and buggy exploit, Limera1n, at the last minute on the heels of Greenpois0n stirred the pot.
We wait again, although Limera1n provides the solution most were waiting for.
THIS IS NOT AN UNLOCK FOR 4.1. Those who updated to a stock 4.1 will be waiting in vain for sometime for the new unlock. This jailbreak allows those on 4.0.2 to jailbreak and unlock using existing unlock, Ultrasn0w.
YOU CANNOT DOWN GRADE THE DAMAGE DONE IN A 4.1 UPGRADE. YOUR MODEM IS PERMANENTLY CHANGED AND WILL NOT ALLOW FOR UNLOCKING.
